Shimla and Manali both sit on every Himachal itinerary, but which one comes first genuinely changes the shape of the trip — not just the order of photos.
Shimla first: the gentler start
Coming from Chandigarh, Shimla is a shorter first drive (roughly 3–4 hours on a good road) and a colonial hill-station pace to ease into — Mall Road, the Ridge, a day trip to Kufri. Manali then becomes the trip's high point, saved for when you're already acclimatised to the altitude and the driving.
Manali first: front-load the mountains
Some travellers prefer to get the longer Chandigarh–Manali drive (7–8 hours) done on day one while energy is highest, front-loading the Rohtang and Solang Valley views, then unwind in Shimla's slower pace on the way back out.
Our usual recommendation
For a first Himachal trip, Shimla first tends to work better — it's a gentler introduction to hill driving, and arriving in Manali partway through the trip means you're not managing altitude and a long drive on the same day. For repeat visitors chasing snow at Rohtang, Manali first can make sense if the pass is only open for a narrow window.
Either way, build in a full rest day somewhere in the middle — the roads are the main event in Himachal, and back-to-back travel days are the fastest way to turn a mountain trip into an endurance test.
